I was as shocked as saddened by the anti-Trump protests that have erupted across cities of USA. Reportedly demonstrators carried out placards condemning Trump and shouting slogans against him. In some places traffic were disrupted causing a lot of inconvenience to public. Some of the banners that read ‘Trump is not my President’, ‘Dump Trump’ and the likes, while some of you are demanding his impeachment.
Is this the kind of liberalism we preach to the world?
Is this the democratic ideals we espouse upon?
Like most of you I never wanted Trump to win. Still I feel immense hurt and angst when I recall his behaviors and comments against migrants, religious minorities, Africans, women, LGBT community and disabled people. Despite all his limitations, he was elected to be the President of USA by his own countrymen – the very same people who elected a democrat to the post in previous two occasions.
Why we have problem accepting the verdict then?
Certainly, Trump did not win the election through malpractices or backdoor, did he? He won fair and square through a democratic process. We got to respect the mandate if we believe the adage ‘democracy is by the people, of the people and for the people.’ Sadly now many of you behaving as if democracy has become ‘buy the people, off the people and forget the people”.
Condemning Trump even before he assumes office is in very bad taste and against ethos of liberalism. You have the right to protest against his future policies and actions, but not against his ascension to high office which is in accordance with most liberal constitution of the world. America has one of the most educated and well-informed hoi polloi. If they have decided to elect Trump we got to respect the decision
We liberals advocate for tolerance of different ideas and viewpoints, but of late we have ourselves turned into intolerants of views of others. We are against oppression of minority by majority community but we turn a blind eye when the oppressed turn our oppressor. We are for a composite inclusive culture but we show a deaf ear when handfuls few try impose their own culture on us. We abhor violence but tolerate violence unleashed by few radicals on innocent many. Often we go to the extent of twisting and amending laws to favor some particular group.
Our approach to liberalist has become orthodox. This is surely not democracy but hypocrisy. This is not liberalism but a kind of extremism. We deserved to be called ‘libtards’ if we can’t stand by our own principles. As long as we don’t put our house in order we have no right to criticize others.
The President elect was very humble in victory and extended a conciliatory hand to his opponents in his first address to media. The nationwide anti-Trump protest is thus unjustified. Some of the protestors have started circulating Trump’s daughter Ivanka and wife Melania’s nude photos on the web. Even one protestor has gone to the extent of pooping on the street and wiping off her onus with Trump poster publicly. Surely, such behaviours are not acceptable and bringing shame to a great idea like ‘liberalism’.
Trump may be racist, minsogynst, anti-minority and a radical conservative jerk, but ‘liberalism’ as a principle still gives him space to air his voice no matter how contrary his ideas to our own liberal belief as long it does not lead to or incite violence.
My humble request to you all please doesn’t malign a noble princlple like ‘liberalism’ or use it as cover to hide your personal/group agenda. Liberalism is not an water tight compartment but an open space. You have to respect others ideas, ideology and beliefs.
